Dear CAPCSD Member,
We are midway through the semester, with the end of term and holidays approaching. November is a time for reflection and gratitude, and I am particularly thankful for the opportunity to serve CAPCSD, a thriving community of educators and professionals.
Nominations for CAPCSD President-Elect and Secretary are currently open, and I encourage you to consider nominating yourself or a respected colleague. We are also accepting applications for our honors and awards programs. Please consider nominating a colleague for Honors of the Council or a Distinguished Contribution Award to recognize their significant contributions to our field. Additionally, applications are now open for the Excellence in Diversity Award, recognizing individuals or academic programs making meaningful contributions to achieving diversity in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The deadline for all nominations is Wednesday, December 11th.
On behalf of the CAPCSD Board of Directors, I want to share an important change to our business meetings. For many years, CAPCSD has hosted a reception and conducted a business meeting on the Wednesday prior to the ASHA Convention. Over the past several years, attendance has been declining at the event while costs continue to increase. Additionally, our monthly newsletter has proven to be an effective channel for sharing events and news with CAPCSD members. Therefore, we will not host a fall reception this year. We look forward to seeing you at our spring business meeting at the CAPCSD Conference in Atlanta in April 2025.
If you're looking to expand your professional knowledge, I encourage you to explore our upcoming CAPCSD Webinars. This month we're offering three webinars covering topics from qualitative data and AI to instructing students from Gen Z to supporting faculty with historically excluded identities. We hope you'll join us for these engaging learning opportunities.
Thank you for your continued dedication to advancing our field. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you'll find time to relax and enjoy moments with family and friends.

The AI Taskforce has been actively exploring the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence within CSD programs. Our discussions so far have covered a wide range of topics, including ethical considerations, privacy concerns, and practical applications of AI in clinical and educational settings. We’re focused on researching how to effectively integrate AI into classroom instruction and clinical planning. Additionally, we’re examining the potential impacts of AI on admissions and student evaluations, aiming to equip educators and students with the necessary skills to navigate this new terrain.
In the near future, we will distribute a survey to CAPCSD members to gather valuable insights. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping our future recommendations and resources. We eagerly anticipate your participation and look forward to your continued engagement as we navigate this evolving landscape together.
Please stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to contribute to this important initiative. For more information about the AI Taskforce, visit AI Taskforce Membership.

Conference Planning Committee
|
Each year, the Conference Planning Committee (CPC) embarks on an exciting journey to create an unforgettable annual conference for CAPCSD members. Their mission? To create a dynamic event with top-notch learning and networking opportunities. The process begins with a deep dive into hundreds of pages of feedback from the previous year’s conference, identifying popular topics, suggested speakers, and overall conference content. The CPC gathers for a strategic planning session during the summer where they draft abstracts, set learning goals, and reach out to field experts to share their insights.
A key player in this endeavor is Mandie McKenzie, CAPCSD’s Director of Professional Development, whose support is invaluable in bringing the CPC’s vision to life. Historically, the conference featured predominantly curated sessions, with only about 15% of presentations coming from an open call for papers. Continuing the success of increasing this in recent years, this year’s conference will feature a balanced offering of invited speakers and sessions chosen through the open call process.
Looking forward to the 2025 CAPCSD Annual Conference, attendees can expect a blend of engaging plenary sessions, solution-focused dialogues, and interactive breakout sessions. Plus, don’t miss out on new opportunities for connection and collaboration during Networking Nights. Get ready for a conference experience that promises to be both enriching and inspiring!

"Atlanta doesn’t settle for doing anything the way it’s always been done.
We didn’t create freedom, soda, grits or hospitality—we elevated them into something sacred. We didn’t invent hip-hop—we just took it to a whole different level.
We raise the bar, because we don’t look to others for inspiration. Instead we look ahead to our own future and see our influence on everything as we move.
And that small difference doesn’t just set us apart. It defines us.
Atlanta. On A Different Level." DiscoverAtlanta.com

Rethinking GPA: Using Varied Calculations to Assess Applicant Potential in CSD Programs
We know from the CSDCAS data that GPA is the greatest predictor of admission to a CSD program. But even within this measure, there is variability that can sometimes provide an incomplete picture of an applicant's academic capabilities. For example, a low cumulative GPA may result from an applicant's early academic struggles—particularly during their freshman year—despite a trend of improvement in subsequent years. This discrepancy can place otherwise capable candidates at a disadvantage, even if they meet or exceed academic standards later in their undergraduate studies or in a leveling program.
To address this, many CSD programs have adopted alternative GPA calculations, such as looking at a GPA from just the last 60 or 45 credits earned. This approach allows admissions committees to emphasize applicants' more recent academic performance and can show an applicant’s growth and strength in advanced coursework, which is often more indicative of their potential for success in graduate school.
Using CSDCAS, programs have access to multiple GPA calculations tailored to meet specific admission priorities. With CSDCAS, programs can easily compare cumulative GPA, CSD GPA, prerequisite-specific GPA, and can customize a GPA to look at a specified last number of credits earned (e.g. last 45 or 60), or create other customizations. This flexibility enables programs to select a GPA measure that aligns with their unique admissions philosophy, such as prioritizing growth, subject-specific strength, or consistent academic achievement.
