Dear CAPCSD Member,
The strength of our CSD education community continues to inspire me through your dedication and innovative approaches to advancing our field. In my ongoing conversations with many of you, I've witnessed firsthand how our programs and faculty maintain their unwavering commitment to excellence in communication sciences and disorders education.
Before sharing other updates, I want to highlight an immediate opportunity: our call for committee volunteers closes tomorrow, Wednesday, February 5, at 8:00 PM ET. If you've been considering ways to contribute to our profession, I strongly encourage you to submit your application today. Committee service is an invaluable way to shape the future of CSD education, and we need engaged members like you to help advance our mission.
I am also excited to share two significant opportunities for our community. Through the generosity of Intelligent Video Solutions (IVS), we are launching our first faculty seed grant to support scholarship in evidence-based clinical education. Additionally, registration is now open for our Annual Conference in Atlanta (April 23-26), featuring an innovative program focused on "Advancing Teaching & Learning."
As we face the evolving landscape of higher education funding and program support, CAPCSD remains committed to providing resources and advocacy for our members. We understand the complex decisions many programs are navigating, and we are here to support you through these challenges. Our strength lies in our ability to collaborate, share resources, and maintain our commitment to educational excellence while adapting to changing circumstances.
Thank you for your continued dedication to excellence in CSD education.

Committee Highlight: DEI Committee
|
As we surge forward into a new semester and a new year, it is our pleasure as the chairs of CAPCSD's DEI Committee to extend well wishes to all members and all member programs of CAPCSD.
This year our committee members and colleagues (who are committed to the ongoing promise of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who champion inclusivity), are tasked with ensuring that our member programs are familiar with culturally responsive standards, as well as disability affirmative standards, which are also embedded in the foundational documents of our governing professional organizations (i.e. CAA, ASHA Certification Standards, Scopes of Practice and Code of Ethics). While navigating the ongoing and potentially forthcoming changes in the political and industrial landscapes that would call for an end to DEI initiatives, we continue to work towards supporting our member programs in their efforts to ensure that these foundational tenets of inclusion, accessibility, and belonging are prioritized.
The extensive resources the committee has curated and made available on the CAPCSD’S DEI Resource Hub is a first-of-its-kind repository that includes pedagogical frameworks, publications, workshops, webinars, and a listing of established affinity groups. The Hub is a living resource that is maintained and updated periodically to assist and support our member programs. We look forward to continuing this work and exploring other avenues of growth by partnering with state organizations, and associations that prioritize and promote under-represented groups in CSD to best serve our members. We look forward to meeting the membership at the annual CAPCSD Conference in Atlanta in April of 2025 where our committee members will engage in several panel presentations on topics of interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Committee Highlight: IPE/IPP Committee

Advancing Interprofessional Education and Practice
The CAPCSD IPE/IPP Committee remains dedicated to supporting Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) programs in developing, implementing, and expanding interprofessional education (IPE), which prepares students from different healthcare and educational professions for interprofessional practice (IPP).
One of our most impactful efforts has been the IPE/IPP Learning Community, a yearlong hybrid program designed to support participants in creating an IPE learning activity in their courses or programs. Through a combination of synchronous sessions and asynchronous activities, participants engage in a structured process to define relevant domains and professions, incorporate key teamwork and collaboration principles outlined by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), select assessment methods, and identify funding sources to develop long-term financial plans for IPE initiatives. Led by national IPE experts on our committee, the Learning Community also provides mentorship in stakeholder engagement, curriculum development, and program evaluation. This year, several members from our inaugural cohort have returned as small group facilitators, fostering peer mentorship and strengthening the learning experience.
To further support our members, the IPE/IPP Committee continues to update its webpage offering a virtual library of resources on IPE development, assessment, funding, and curricular integration. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our support for institutions by fostering connections with other professional organizations, disseminating information about IPP/IPE and increasing networking opportunities for CAPCSD members engaged in interprofessional education. Our goal is to equip professionals with the knowledge and resources needed to foster meaningful collaboration, ultimately enhancing patient care and improving teamwork effectiveness in healthcare and educational settings.
We are grateful for the dedication and expertise of our committee members, facilitators, and participants, whose efforts make these initiatives possible. As we move forward, we welcome continued engagement from our member programs and invite you to share your ideas, challenges, and successes. Please contact Shubha Kashinath, VP for Research and Academic Affairs (vpraa@capcsd.org) and CAPCSD’s Monitoring Officer for the IPE/IPP Committee with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Together, we can advance interprofessional education and practice, ensuring that educational and healthcare teams collaborate effectively to improve patient experiences and outcomes.
