We support, promote, and advance higher education in

Communication Sciences and Disorders

Excellence * Visionary Leadership * Collaboration

Dear Member,

Welcome to November! It’s certainly a busy month for us all in academia. The end of the term is near and holidays are just around the corner. It’s a good time to reflect and be grateful for all the good things we enjoy. I’m feeling especially thankful for the opportunity to serve CAPCSD this year.

We are happy to share that the ETS Praxis Exam Preparation webinar was a success. Over 500 people attended or viewed the presentation. The presentation is posted on the website under Professional Development if you or your students missed it. There are more great webinars coming up in the next couple of weeks. Topics include admissions, core functions, creating accessible courses, and designing online teaching for inclusion, social equity, and justice. Make sure to sign up.

Nominations for CAPCSD President-Elect and Treasurer are now open. Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague for these important leadership positions by December 11th. We have also streamlined the nomination process for committee positions and hope this new process is more transparent and engaging for members.

Please come to the CAPCSD Business meeting on Wednesday, November 15th at 4:15 p.m. in the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport if you are attending ASHA. The Board of Directors will share updates and answer questions.

Safe travels and have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Simpson

President

Business Meeting - 11/15/2023

The fall reception and business meeting will be held next Wednesday, November 15th, from 4:15 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport, 450 Summer St., Boston, MA. The Board of Directors looks forward to seeing you in the Momentum B room and providing updates on the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

Call for Committee Volunteers

Beginning this year, CAPCSD will have a new process for announcing volunteer committee opportunities.

CAPCSD has many committees with varied roles and responsibilities that are supported by volunteers from member programs. Committee appointments are two-year terms that begin July 1st.

In January, CAPCSD members will receive a call for committee volunteers for vacancies that begin July 1, 2024. The email will include information about the committees seeking volunteers, the desired qualifications, time commitment, how to submit a letter of interest and CV, and the submission deadline.

CAPCSD’s mission is to support, promote, and advance higher education programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The expertise of committee members is important for CAPCSD to achieve our mission. We encourage you to consider volunteering and joining a committed network of colleagues from across the discipline.

Clinical Educator/Preceptor eLearning Courses

Supporting Excellence in Clinical Education!

CAPCSD continues to offer FREE evidence-based eLearning courses that cover basic and advanced content to support your effort to provide quality clinical education. Each course contains five (5) independent modules supporting a central theme - take one module or take them all. This series will allow you to progress from foundational to advanced knowledge and skills in clinical education, on an at-will, as-needed basis.

The CAPCSD eLearning courses are designed to be shared with all your university and community-based clinical educators/preceptors at no cost to the user.

Each course module is approved for two (2) or more ASHA continuing education hours (.2 or more CEU), ensuring that successful completion of any one module will allow the learner to meet the basic ASHA clinical educator CEU requirement.

Share the course URLs provided below with your colleagues or use the member’s log-in on the CAPCSD webpage to access your Member Info Hub page, where course descriptions and URLs may be found. If you have not done so already, you can easily set up your free individual CAPCSD account on the log-in page.

Committee Highlight - Meet Your Conference Planning Committee

As VP of Professional Development, I work closely with the Conference Planning Committee to guide the committee's efforts and ensure that the conference aligns with the highest professional standards and fosters growth in the field of communication sciences and disorders.

The CAPCSD Conference Planning Committee (CPC) is the behind-the-scenes crew that makes our annual CAPCSD Conference a real hit.

Pictured left to right: Donna Pitts, Erica Williams, Heidi Verticchio, Kimmerly Harrell, Mike Bamdad, Tricia Montgomery (Monitoring Officer), Ned Campbell, Leanna Lawrence (Chair), and Mandie McKenzie at the New Orleans Marriott in June 2023.

Each year, usually in June, we come together to lay the groundwork for the next year's event. The agenda for our conference planning meeting is extensive, involving key tasks to ensure a well-rounded and enriching conference. We kick things off by gathering feedback from conference evaluations and through suggestions. We reach out to the Board for ideas on relevant topics and potential speakers. It's our responsibility to identify and invite prominent speakers for special sessions and craft the Call for Papers themes. Through our meticulous planning, we strive to ensure that the CAPCSD Conference remains a cornerstone event in the field of communication sciences and disorders, promoting knowledge exchange and professional growth.

Allow me to introduce the dynamic team behind this year’s Conference Planning Committee. At the helm, we have the dedicated CPC Chair, Leanna Lawrence, whose leadership and vision steer the committee's efforts to organize the annual conference seamlessly. We're privileged to have two highly accomplished Speech-Language Pathologists, Heidi Verticchio and Kimmerly Harrell, who bring their expertise and insights to curate impactful sessions and topics. Alongside them, we have two accomplished Audiologists, Erica Williams and Donna Pitts, who contribute their valuable perspectives to ensure a well-rounded conference experience. Mike Bamdad is serving a two-year term as a special advisor to the CPC. Together, this team collaborates to make the CAPCSD Conference a resounding success, fostering knowledge exchange, and professional advancement.

If you're eager to get involved in the planning of the CAPCSD Conference, make sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming opportunities this spring!

Save the dates and make plans to attend CAPCSD's 45th Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA, April 3 - 6, 2024. Conference registration and the hotel room block will open in early January 2024.

For information about the conference schedule, registration fees, and to begin planning your trip to New Orleans, check out the travel blogs, attractions, and information posted on our website here: https://www.capcsd.org/annual-conference/.

Admissions Corner

Now is the time of year when we really start to see students submitting their applications. To help you organize and keep track of all of your CSDCAS admissions processes, be sure to set up Local Statuses. They are the foundation of managing your applicant pool in WebAdMIT.

If you'll be at the ASHA Convention in Boston next week, please stop by the CSDCAS booth in the Grad Fair area! We will be available to help you get the best out of CSDCAS and answer any questions you have about using it. If you aren't using it yet to manage your graduate admissions, we'd love to talk with you about the many benefits of using this system. Stop by on Thursday or Friday and we'll treat you to a cup of coffee (a Starbucks gift card)!
