The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Chapman University, Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences invites applications for a non-tenured faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The CSD graduate program is located on the Rinker Health Science Campus in Irvine, California. The campus is designed to foster an inter-professional educational environment and cutting-edge technology in teaching and practice. The campus is home to accredited graduate health science professional programs offering the following degrees: Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders; Master of Physician Assistant Sciences; Doctor of Physical Therapy; and Doctor of Pharmacy. The campus is distinguished by its innovative research laboratories, teaching and learning technology, and emphasis on inter-professional education, evidence-based practice, and health promotion and prevention. The Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences, an integral part of Crean College, is located on the Rinker campus. It provides opportunities for interdisciplinary research with leaders in neuroscience. Additionally, the CSD program is associated with the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Orange County, and strategically located near 30+ school districts and medical centers in the heart of Orange County. The department houses the Adult Learning Lab, a unique clinic that exclusively assesses and treats adults with acquired brain injury and other neurological problems.


The mission of the CSD department is to prepare ethical, research-conscious, and culturally responsive speech-language pathologists committed to assessing, preventing, and treating communication and swallowing disorders in diverse populations across the lifespan. The CSD program is 14 years old and is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA). Based on a cohort model, the program prepares graduates to provide services in medical, school, and private practice settings.

 

Responsibilities

 

Successful candidates for the position will demonstrate the ability to balance managerial and teaching responsibilities.


  • Provide managerial oversight to the on-campus clinic, called the ‘Adult Learning Lab’ that provides supervised, pro bono services to adults with neurological communication disorders;
  • Interface with faculty from other graduate health professional programs, that educate the next generation of healthcare providers, to promote interprofessional practice and education to graduate students;
  • Supervise graduate students in clinical fieldwork;
  • Teach in any of the following areas: dysphagia, motor speech disorders, voice, and/or cognitive-communication disorders;
  • Provide service to the department and the college;
  • Advise graduate students in CSD.

 

This is a full-time, twelve-month, non-tenure track faculty position. This faculty member works closely with the Director of Clinical Education and the department Chair.

 

Qualifications


Excellence in teaching, clinical supervision, knowledge of health care issues, and a commitment to working in an inter-professional health services environment. Applicants must have a master’s degree in CSD, hold their CCC-SLP certification, and be eligible for CA license.


Minimum requirements:


  • A graduate degree in CSD, e.g., MS, MA or PhD in the field
  • ASHA certification in Speech-language pathology with eligibility for California state licensure
  • 5 years of clinical experience working with adults with neurological problems.
  • Have experience supervising graduate students
  • Have knowledge about managing a university clinic in CSD.
  • Be able to integrate issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and supervision.

Successful completion of a criminal background check is required for the final candidate. Application reviews will begin August 15, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. Salary range is $100,000 to $110,000 annually.
