About the Position

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders within the College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in research, education, and clinical and community engagement, while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment within the department. The Department Head will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, promoting scholarly activities, and ensuring the continued growth and success of the department within the framework of the university's mission and goals.

The Department Head position will be hired as full professor on the Educator or Tenure Track. Competitive salary support will be commensurate with credentials and experience.

About the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) has a large and diverse graduate program including both distance learning and on-campus MA-SLP programs, an AuD program, and a PhD program. There is also a well-developed, high-enrollment undergraduate program. Faculty within CSD represent adjunct, clinical, educator, research, and tenure track professors. Staff within the department include program managers, financial administrators, and program coordinators for the clinic. The CSD department is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA).

The department has established, long-running collaborations across the university and with highly regarded, local health and educational entities, such as the Cincinnati Public Schools, the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs, and UC Health. Aligned with these collaborations, we have a large portfolio of clinical placement opportunities in area hospitals, clinics, and schools. The department also runs an on-site speech and hearing clinic that provides student training and clinical services.

The College of Allied Health Sciences educates and prepares future allied health and other health science professionals to provide high quality service in their respective fields. The College of Allied Health Sciences consists of four academic units including: Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders; Department of Rehabilitation, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences; Department of Clinical Health and Information Sciences; and the School of Social Work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, teaching, and service activities consistent with faculty evaluation criteria and the missions of the department, college, and university;
  • Direct and/or indirect supervision and retention of outstanding, productive, and diversified faculty and staff;
  • Leadership in academic governance, including the collaborative development of appropriate policies and procedures regarding: reappointment, promotion, and tenure; leaves; long-range planning; curriculum development; program review; distribution and utilization of resources, etc.;
  • Management and oversight of the department’s budget (all funds), class schedules, course offerings, teaching assignments, and faculty/staff professional development;
  • Ongoing collaboration with the UC Speech and Hearing Clinic to develop, implement, and grow clinical programs to foster student success;
  • Partnerships with the CAHS Dean and Associate Dean of Research to carry out the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the department, college, and university;
  • Commitment to upholding the University of Cincinnati's Next Lives Here initiative of academic excellence, innovation, and urban impact;
  • Adherence to national CSD accreditation standards and regulations;
  • Other duties as prescribed in Article 31 of the AAUP-UC Collective Bargaining Agreement found at


Required Education

An earned doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, audiology, or related field


Minimum Qualifications

  • An established record of research, teaching, and service that meets the criteria for appointment at the rank of full professor on the educator or tenure track;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills that foster collaborative communication among faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community stakeholders;
  • Leadership that fosters a culture of collaboration, inclusion, ongoing learning, and positivity among students, faculty, staff, and community partners;
  • Three to five years of administrative experience, including sound fiscal management; interest and proficiency in faculty development and mentoring; experience with curriculum development and implementation; and proficiency with educational technology;
  • Advocacy of policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels of the academic community;
  • Knowledge of scholarly research activities, including the pursuance and management of external funding;
  • Knowledge of a CSD clinical education program, including a verifiable understanding of program requirements, knowledge of the inner workings of an on-campus clinic, and aptitude for supporting clinical faculty, supervisors, and staff;
  • Familiarity with national accreditation standards and procedures relevant to a CSD program.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience operating a clinical training facility
  • Strong record of extramural funding
