The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate professor in swallowing disorders with appointment to begin in August 2021.

CSUF faculty are committed teachers/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. 

Responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in speech-language pathology. One specific course that this colleague will teach is COMD 543, Seminar in Swallowing Disorders. Faculty members are expected to engage in a systematic program of scholarly research, actively participate in faculty governance, serve on committees, develop curriculum, provide academic advisement, and engage in activities that benefit the university/community in ways that support an equitable and inclusive environment for colleagues and students. This colleague will also be responsible for producing scholarship/creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure and/or promotion. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities. 

Required Qualifications 

•Knowledge/experience needed to teach courses with an emphasis in Dysphagia 

•Additional expertise in at least one of the following areas: voice disorders, adult language disorders, motor speech disorders, speech science, research methods 

•Doctorate in communication sciences and disorders/speech-language pathology with an emphasis in swallowing disorders. Strong candidates in other areas of related expertise will be considered. ABDs will be considered but must have doctorate completed before the appointment date. 


•Qualification for immediate California licensure in speech-language pathology 

•Evidence of strong potential for effectiveness in teaching 

•Evidence of strong potential for effectiveness in research leading to scholarly publications 

•For associate rank, established record of research productivity 

•For associate rank, clinical expertise in dysphagia 

•Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service 

•Demonstrated commitment to teaching a very diverse student population, including first-generation college students 

•Experience / evidence of interacting successfully in a multicultural environment 

•Experience / evidence of working harmoniously with students, colleagues, and the community 

Preferred Qualifications 

•Board certification in dysphagia 

•Experience working on projects involving two or more individuals for a common purpose with colleagues and community

The College and Department 

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Communications was established in fall 2017. Prior to becoming a department, it was the Communicative Disorders Program in the Department of Human Communication Studies. We have been accredited by the Council on Academic Programs in audiology and speech-language pathology since 1962. Our department is committed to maintain diverse students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. We have a large undergraduate program with approximately 500 majors with a diverse group of students. Our graduate program became a cohort model in 2018 and admits 24-28 students annually. Currently, we have10 tenure-track faculty members with various expertise and two full-time lecturers. We are committed to have our diverse faculty members. Currently, four of the ten tenure-track faculty members are bilingual speakers.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
