The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences is a vibrant department, serving over 80 graduate students and 220 undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students a year. The department offers a graduate program educating future speech-language pathologists, as well as an undergraduate degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and a post-baccalaureate program preparing students to enter graduate level work in a variety of fields, especially speech-language pathology and audiology. SPHR faculty include 8 tenure-line research faculty and 8 clinical faculty, and adjunct faculty. Position Summary

The Speech and Hearing Sciences Department at Portland State University invites applications for a non tenure-track position at the Assistant Clinical Professor level, beginning December 16, 2019. This core SPHR faculty member will provide academic and clinical instruction in the area of speech-language pathology and will coordinate pediatric medical externships. This is a 1.0 FTE 9 month position with full benefits.


Responsibilities include contributing to pediatric and medical academic and clinical instruction in the following areas:

  • Undergraduate and/or graduate academic teaching.  Instruction includes five to six courses per year (one to two courses per term) related to pediatric topics, including specialty medical and speech sound disorder topics.
  • Clinic coordination and supervision, including related seminars for speech-language pathology graduate students related to pediatric clinical populations. Clinically related activities will be conducted at PSU’s Speech and Language Clinic and could be conducted in the community in the future, as appropriate.
  • Clinical externship coordination for graduate students, including maintenance and development of on-going relationships and contracts with off-campus externship sites.
  • Perform regular university and departmental administrative and service duties, including committee work, graduate selection, comprehensive exam review, advising, curriculum/program development, and graduation and orientation events.

Required Qualifications  

- Have and maintain a current speech-language pathology license from the state of Oregon, or eligible for such license.  Must obtain license prior to hire date (as required by the state of Oregon).

- Earned master’s degree in speech-language pathology.

- Minimum of 3 years, broad-scope clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist required.


Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to those candidates who have

- at least 4 years of post-certification clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist.

- post-certification clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist in a pediatric medical setting.

- clinical and/or teaching experience at the higher education level in one or more of the following areas: Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Cleft Palate and/or Craniofacial Disorders, Speech Sound Disorders, Anatomy and Physiology, Voice Disorders, Pediatric Swallowing Disorders, and related coursework.

- demonstrated use of evidence-based practice methodologies in assessment and treatment.

- previous supervisory experience with university students.


Clinical certification from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) and licensure in the state of Oregon in speech-language pathology are required.


Compensation

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be competitive with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
