Assistant Professor, Hearing Science
Seeking a full-time tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in hearing science who is committed to the advancement of research and teaching in the area of communication outcomes. Duties for this position include undergraduate and graduate teaching, scholarly research, directing student research, and participating in service activities.
The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences consistently ranks among the top 5 Speech and Hearing Sciences departments in the US. Our research, education, and clinical activities are dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals affected by challenges in speech, language and hearing across the life span (https://sphsc.washington.edu/vision-mission). We have close interdisciplinary ties with related units on campus and in the community, including the Departments of Psychology and Linguistics; the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center; the Graduate Program in Neuroscience; the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences; the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center; the Autism Center; the Integrated Brain Imaging Center; the Seattle Children’s Hospital; and The Memory, Brain and Wellness Center at Harborview Medical Center.
Tenure track faculty in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences have an annual service period of nine months (Sept 16 - June 15). A Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences or a related field, or foreign equivalent, is required. Applicants will be considered in any area of hearing research including, but not limited to:
- Multidisciplinary approaches to hearing science that incorporate psychology, engineering, biology, neuroscience, and/or linguistics
- Impact of hearing loss and/or hearing assistive technology on human communication across the lifespan
- Auditory development in infants and children with or without hearing loss
The successful candidate will be able to complement our existing strengths in research and teaching and will have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in groups of faculty or other scientists. Primary evaluation categories include evidence of research productivity and impact, potential for external funding, teaching effectiveness, a commitment to service, and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
