DISCIPLINE Speech-Language Pathology

Seeking a full-time tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in voice, swallowing, phonology, or speech development/disorders. Duties for this position include undergraduate and graduate teaching in applied areas of speech-language pathology, performing scholarly research, directing student research, and participating in service activities.

    

The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences consistently ranks among the top 5 Speech and Hearing Sciences departments in the US. Our research, education, and clinical activities are dedicated towards improving the quality of life for individuals affected by challenges in speech, language and hearing across the life span (https://sphsc.washington.edu/vision-mission). We have close interdisciplinary ties with related units on campus, including the Departments of Linguistics, Psychology, Music, and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; the Graduate Program in Neuroscience; the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center; the Autism Center; the Integrated Brain Imaging Center; the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences; the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Tenure track faculty in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences have an annual service period of nine months (Sept 16 - June 15).             Qualifications

          

A Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences or a related field, or foreign equivalent, is required. Applicants will be considered in any area of voice, swallowing, phonology, or speech development and disorders research including, but not limited to: 

  • Approaches that identify causes of voice, swallowing, phonological, and/or speech disorders that can inform our professional education programs and clinical services
  • Methods for assessing and measuring the impact of voice, swallowing, phonological, and speech disorders on body functions and structures, individuals with these disorders, their families and communities
  • Developing efficacious interventions for those with voice, swallowing, phonological, and/or speech disorders
  • Exploring the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practice in communication disorders in these areas

The successful candidate will be able to complement our existing strengths in research and teaching and will have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in groups of faculty or other scientists. Primary evaluation categories include evidence of research productivity and impact, potential for external funding, teaching effectiveness, a commitment to service and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
