The University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Department Chair in Communication Science and Disorders (CSD). The program is seeking a dynamic individual with exceptional communication and collaborative abilities to lead the department in its ongoing pursuit of excellence in academics, research, and service through partnerships regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Chair will provide leadership, vision, and management of a rich collection of academic and research programs. The Chair will have a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as well as interdisciplinary and interprofessional education. The Chair will foster a supportive environment to enrich the development of faculty, staff, and students and will represent audiology and speech-language pathology in the academy, the professions, and the University.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated a history of or evidence of potential for accomplished academic leadership grounded in the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. They will have demonstrated distinguished scholarship, excellence in teaching, success with multidisciplinary collaborations, and outstanding communication skills. They will demonstrate an understanding of systems that impact audiology and speech-language pathology currently with projections of changes in healthcare for the future. This is a 12-month tenure track position at the Associate/Full Professor level.


The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and will lead the CSD department in contributing to the University of Pittsburgh Strategic Plan (for details see Plan for Pitt). The Chair will work with the Dean and faculty to develop and implement innovative department initiatives and advance the research, teaching, and clinical education missions of the department. The ideal candidate will bring energy, creativity, and leadership along with a strong commitment to the departmental mission of CSD.


In collaboration with the faculty, the Chair is responsible for setting curricular and program priorities and allocating resources to meet those priorities; mentoring the faculty; managing the departmental budget; determining and assigning faculty and staff teaching and service assignments; managing administrative staff operations; evaluating faculty and staff performance and recommending salary raises based on performance; ensuring program adherence to accreditation and certification standards; and ensuring that the core missions of the department are achieved.


The successful candidate must have a PhD degree with a concentration in speech, language, and/or hearing science, audiology, speech-language pathology, or a related field and a record that would earn tenure at the rank of Associate/Full Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. An Associate Professor with Tenure will demonstrate excellence in research with a productive, funded program of independent research that addresses significant problems in the area of specialization. This individual will have evidence of excellence in teaching and service excellence at the local and national level. A Professor with Tenure will exceed the standards described for rank of Associate Professor resulting in attainment of superior stature and international reputation in their field of knowledge across research, teaching and service. While no candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will demonstrate many of the following preferred professional and personal qualifications:

  • Experience building research and scholarship
  • A commitment to excellence in academic and clinical education
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and curriculum development
  • Experience in administration and fiscal management of an organizational unit
  • Ability to recruit and mentor staff and faculty to achieve personal, departmental, School and University goals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accreditation and credentialing processes
  • Experience with innovative program development (i.e., in research, teaching).
  • Demonstrated experience, commitment and service to equity, justice, inclusion, and diversity in the field of CSD
