Department Chair, Full or Associate Professor
The William Paterson University of New Jersey invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. This is a full time 10-month, tenure-track position with an academic starting date of September 2020. Summer administrative duties are available for additional compensation. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience. It is possible for qualified candidates with tenure at other universities to negotiate tenure upon hire. Applicants with areas of specialization that meet the curricular needs of the program will be considered.
Reporting to the Dean of Science and Health, the Department Chair will provide academic and administrative leadership for the Department and the Speech and Hearing Clinic. This includes, but is not limited to teaching, participating in the service opportunities within the department, college, and university community, and advancing a research agenda in area of expertise. Chairpersons serve three-year terms. At the end of three years, chairs may be re-elected by the faculty.
The William Paterson University Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences offers both undergraduate and master’s degrees. The graduate program boasts accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and includes a vibrant on-campus Speech and Hearing Clinic that provides diagnostic and treatment services to the community. The department and clinic are located in a new, state-of-the-art building.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Advocating for the Department’s needs
Fostering an atmosphere in support of the mission of the department and University.
Coordinating and managing departmental operations, including, but not limited to, course enrollments, departmental expenditures, faculty and adjunct assignments, and academic course schedules
Collaborating with the Director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic to coordinate the clinical and academic components of the program
Collaborating with the Graduate Program Director, Clinic Director, and faculty to maintain accreditation standards and prepare for 2021 reaccreditation
Coordinating the academic review process for undergraduate and graduate programs
Earned doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Speech-Language Sciences.
Five (5) or more years full-time higher education experience
Knowledge of accreditation standards
Record of active scholarship in a research specialty
Record of excellence in teaching
Evidence of relevant administrative managerial skills, and a record of service.
Current ASHA certification and eligibility for licensure as a speech-language pathologist in New Jersey (preferred)
Able to listen objectively, understand, and accurately interpret what someone else is saying
Demonstrated ability to positively engage, relate, and influence others in their actions, decisions, opinions, or thinking
Capable of communicating and promoting the value and importance of role and responsibilities
Able to embrace shared governance by maintaining a focus on standards of excellence
Evidence of having a collaborative style of leadership and administration that builds and maintains a culture of trust and confidence with faculty, staff, students, and administrators
