Excellence * Visionary Leadership * Collaboration

Dear CAPCSD Members:

I hope all of you are enjoying the change in season and are doing well.  Many of you may be enjoying your Fall Breaks, and if so, I hope the break re-energizes you to finish the semester strong.

CAPCSD recognizes that many of our colleagues and their students were recently impacted by Hurricane Ian. I encourage you to please contact me if there is anything CAPCSD can do to offer support.

The CAPCSD Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to highlight just a few of our current activities as we promote, support, and advance our member programs.

Warm regards,

Jennifer P. Taylor

President

Do you enjoy clinical supervision?

Do you want to expand your repertoire of knowledge and skills?

CAPCSD offers FREE eLearning courses that cover basic and advanced content to support your effort to provide quality clinical education!

In 2014, CAPCSD launched its clinical educator training initiative to provide member programs and their associates resources to develop and refine the knowledge and skills essential to provide quality clinical education. Content experts were enlisted to provide current evidence-based course materials, on-line educational platform experts were employed to develop multimodal, on-demand learning modules, and course content was peer-reviewed for currency and relevance – all under the direction of a dedicated CAPCSD volunteer committee.

Our first two courses, Foundations of Clinical Education and Effective Student-Clinical Educator Relationships, launched in 2017, followed by Feedback in the Clinical Environment and Assessing Student Performance in 2019.Courses were reconfigured on a new learning platform starting in 2020 to facilitate ease of access, with the final course relaunched in spring 2022. Each course contains 5 (five) independent modules supporting a central theme - take one module or take them all! This series will allow you to progress from foundational to advanced knowledge and skills in clinical education, on an at-will, as-needed basis.

The CAPCSD eLearning courses are designed to be shared with all your university and community-based clinical educators/preceptors at no cost to the user. Each course module is approved for 2 (two) or more ASHA continuing education hours (.2 or more CEU), ensuring that successful completion of any one module will allow the learner to meet the basic ASHA clinical educator CEU requirement.

CAPCSD members will find the URLs to access the courses when they login to their CAPCSD membership on the CAPCSD website homepage. The courses require no passwords!  When you login, the course descriptions and URLs can immediately be found on your Member Info Hub page. Course URLs may be shared freely with all your associates. If you have not already done so, you can easily set-up your free individual CAPCSD membership account using your university email by clicking here.

We have provided a Dissemination Toolkit with resources to assist you promote the CAPCSD eLearning courses to your clinical education colleagues and community partners. The toolkit may be found on the eLearning Course information page on the CAPCSD website.  You will find customizable materials including course announcement fliers and posters, as well as print instructions and a PPT presentation on course access.

Help spread the word!

Update from the VP of Admissions

The CAPCSD Admissions Committee, comprised of 10 creative, innovative leaders from our member programs, is excited to dive into our work for the 2022-2023 academic year. Our efforts this year will support four broad goals. First, we aim to curate a set of resources, centralized in a website, that provide comprehensive resources for the admissions space, including resources that address the principles and mechanics of best practices for CSD admissions. Second, we aim to conduct a review of the role of letters of recommendation in the admissions process with an eye towards developing information and resources for applicants, letter writers, and reviewers. Third, we aim to help member programs anticipate and prepare for the projected nationwide decline in college enrollment to help ensure minimal disruption to our graduate training programs. Fourth, we aim to instantiate a comprehensive review of CSDCAS, the centralized application program for CSD, in the spirit of making sure that this “by us, for us” resource is sustained as a thriving tool for CSD admissions. Service on these goals will be accompanied by continued support for existing Admissions Committee efforts including administration of the CSDCAS Open Data Initiative, the 2023 Admissions Summit, and the annual Applicant Data Report.

We note that the annual applicant data report provides a national-level view of the CSD admissions space, which member programs may find useful as a point of comparison for individual program trends. One recent national-level trend that was of high interest when presented at the 2022 CAPCSD conference was the sharp decline in CSDCAS applicants who reported taking the GRE. In the 2021-2022 cycle, only 48% of applicants reported GRE scores compared to 95% of applicants in the 2019-2020 cycle. This is consistent with only 36% of SLP programs and 43% of AUD programs that use CSDCAS requiring GRE scores in the 2021-2022 cycle. Continued monitoring of this trend, among others, is one benefit of a centralized CSD application system, and member programs have access to these data via the annual applicant data report.

In all our efforts, the CAPCSD Admissions Committee is keen to receive broad stakeholder input and feedback. I can be reached at vpa@capcsd.org.
