Challenging Student Placements: Strategies for Strengthening Clinical Partnerships

Challenging Student Placements: Strategies for Strengthening Clinical Partnerships

Tuesday, September 27, 2022 (7:00 PM - 8:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Preceptors/supervisors in community placements are an integral part of the clinical education provided by audiology and speech-language pathology programs. As such, it's critical that program placement coordinators develop strategies to encourage continued participation, effective communication, and student-supervisor expectations so they can recognize preceptor/supervisor burnout, and manage issues that may arise between clinical educators and student clinicians. As productivity and caseload demands on preceptors/supervisors increase, they are faced with additional barriers that make their role as clinical educators more challenging.

This session will explore common challenges that can occur in community placements for both speech-language pathology and audiology student clinicians, as well as strategies to mitigate "placement disasters". Strategies for student clinician preparation, expectation development, and tools to develop strong communication between preceptor/supervisor, will be explored. Suggested methods to support the continued development of preceptors/supervisors will be provided. Scenario-based learning will be used to solidify key messages from the session.
