Description

Clinical workload is an ongoing topic for university clinic administrators. Although there is no one "answer" there are principled reasons for assigning workload while considering community need, clinical faculty expertise, time, and potential promotion. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Describe two different models for assigning clinical workload 
  • List how clinical faculty workload might vary dependent upon appointment type (assessment versus treatment) 
  • Analyze how documentation responsibilities impact clinical faculty workload

Cara Boester, M.A., CCC-SLP


Cara Boester MA, CCC-SLP, Director of Clinical Education for Speech-Language Pathology at Illinois State University.  In addition to her administrative duties scheduling on-campus, off-campus and full-time externship placements, she provides speech, language, and aural rehab services to deaf/ hard of hearing clients across the age span.

Rebecca Lulai, M.A., CCC-SLP


Rebecca Lulai, M.A., CCC-SLP is the Director of Clinical Programs in Speech-Language Pathology in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the University of Minnesota.  She has worked in clinical education since 2006 as a clinical supervisor and Voice Banking Project Lead at the Julia M. Davis Speech-Language-Hearing Center on the University of Minnesota campus.  Prior to joining higher education, she worked clinically in a variety of settings including public schools, hospitals, private practice, and outpatient clinics.   She holds a license in Speech-Language Pathology from the MN Department of Health and a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  Rebecca has been a member of the MNSHA Policy Council since 2012 and serves as the State Advocate for Medicare Policy.

Christie Needham, M.A., CCC-SLP


Christie A. Needham, M.A., CCC-SLP is the Director of Clinical Education, Department Chair and an Associate Professor at Baldwin Wallace University.  Administrative responsibilities include the on-site clinic, externships and off-site partnerships.  Her research is in clinical education, the use of technology, and community engagement practices.

Danielle R. Varnedoe, M.A., CCC-SLP


Danielle Varnedoe, M.A., CCC-SLP is a Senior Instructor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Carolina.  She is the Director of the Montgomery Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic and the Director of Clinical Education.  Danielle is involved in various aspects of clinical education and training of graduate students, ensures compliance with all state and federal regulations for health care providers, and is responsible for the financial oversight of the clinic.
