Pharmacology and Communication Disorders: Using Simulation in Graduate Education

This 2-hour webinar will provide relevant information related to pharmacology and communication disorders. Available resources for communication professionals will be provided as well as teaching pharmacology in a simulated environment. 

Learning Objectives 

  • Describe pharmaceuticals that are prescribed for common diagnoses
  • Identify medications with negative side effects affecting speech, language, hearing, cognition and swallowing/feeding
  • List 3 resources for finding information about commonly used pharmaceuticals
  • List two simulated activities that could be used to teach pharmacology in communication sciences and disorders

Speakers 

Elizabeth A. VandeWaa, PhD 
University of South Alabama
 

Dr. Elizabeth VandeWaa, PhD, is a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of South Alabama College of Nursing. She teaches Pharmacology and Pathophysiology to baccalaureate, Masters, and Doctoral students in both the classroom and online settings. Her research has included aspects of both Pharamcology and simulation, including interprofessional studies of pharmacological knowledge in students in Audiology, Speech-Pathology and Nursing.

Linda Logan, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP

University of Georgia


Linda Logan, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP is on faculty at the University of Georgia, College of Pharmacy/College of Education providing experiential education for pharmacy students and teaching psychopharmacolgy focusing on optimum use of medications with graduate psychology students. She earned her BSPharmacy at UGA and her Pharm.D. from CU Denver and has over 25 years experience in hospital and community pharmacy.
