This session will explore evidence-informed ways in which course instructors can actively engage their students in a variety of ways across course delivery modalities (e.g., face-to-face, hybrid, hyflex, online). The emphasis for this session will be on thinking about the possibilities that exist to connect with and engage with students to support their learning and attainment of course learning objectives.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand 5-7 different student engagement techniques
  • To consider ways in which student engagement techniques can be used across course delivery modalities
  • Plan for ways in which these techniques can be applied to the course participants are designing/teaching


Time Ordered Agenda

7:00 - 7:05: Introduction of speaker and topic 

7:05 - 7:35: Introduction of 4 student engagement techniques and opportunity for Q&A

7:35 - 8:05: Introduction of 4 additional student engagement techniques and opportunity for Q&A

8:05 - 8:25:  Ideas about formative assessment as a vehicle for student engagement 

8:25 - 8:30: Q&A and wrap-up

Jennifer C. Friberg, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow


Dr. Jennifer Friberg is the Interim Director for the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, Cross Endowed Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Professor of Communication Sciences & Disorders at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. She is the founding Associate Editor for Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders and co-editor of Applying the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning beyond the Individual Classroom (Indiana University Press, 2019) and the forthcoming volume Evidence-Based Education in the Classroom: Examples from Clinical Disciplines (Slack, 2021)
