Wednesday, October 16, 2024 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Most clinical educators who support students on their learning journey inevitably face a challenging clinical situation. Student clinicians bring to the clinical environment differing knowledge, clinical experiences, decision-making skills, self-reflection abilities, and personal attributes. When a student has trouble in an external clinical practicum placement, a difficult conversation usually follows. In those instances, open communication between the student and program is necessary. This session will describe how the core function document can provide a supportive mechanism to build partnerships between the program and student. A collaborative partnership provides the repeated opportunity to initiate meaningful and intentional discussions about the core functions of the professions to empower skilled reflective practice and support informed decision making. Similarly, the core functions can assist programs to consider how to develop processes for students who need support in external clinical practicum placements regardless of reason.
