DISCIPLINE Speech-Language Pathology TYPE Faculty

The University of Texas at Tyler invites applicants to apply for the position of Assistant Professor for Speech Language Pathology (tenure-track). We are a highly collegial and intellectually vibrant faculty comprised of applied clinical researchers and clinical educators. UT Tyler, a family-friendly institution, holds an R2 Higher Research Activity Carnegie classification and celebrates research that enriches UT Tyler students and serves the East Texas community. The SLP master’s residential program is a candidate for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and is welcoming the first cohort of 10 graduate students fall 2025. 

The program also includes 65 undergraduate Communication, Sciences, and Disorders (CSD) students and 7 faculty members. UT Tyler has two campuses located in beautiful Tyler, Texas, the Rose Capital of America, which is just 2 hours southeast of downtown Dallas. The SLP program is located on the UTHealth East Texas Health Sciences Campus. The self-sustaining SLP and Audiology Clinic is embedded within the Family Medicine Practice Unit of the hospital, affording our graduate students 3 semesters of training in a low acuity hospital setting before beginning their externship year. The CSD undergraduate program is located on main campus. The two campuses are only 20 minutes apart. The Assistant Professor will have a 12-month appointment, including teaching, scholarship, and service and will have offices on both campuses. On-campus presence is required for teaching and other duties.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. 
  • Conduct research that leads to peer-reviewed publications in area(s) of specialization. 
  • Provide service to the program, department, school, university, and profession.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or EdD) in Speech Language Pathology/CSD/SLHS or related field. 
  • ABD is acceptable, but the degree must be earned by the hire date.
  • ASHA certification in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Texas licensure in SLP or eligibility for licensure.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in motor speech disorders, dysphagia, aphasia, and/or cognitive communication disorders, but all other areas of expertise will be considered.
  • Demonstrated or potential to develop excellence in teaching.
  • Record of scholarly work, including research with the potential for extramural funding consistent with the beginning assistant professor’s level.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
