AUDIOLOGY FACULTY POSITION


POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assistant/Associate/Full, Tenure Stream, Full-Time (9-month) faculty member in Communication Science and Disorders in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.


CONTENT AREA: Applicants with a focus on hearing science, auditory neuroscience, or a related field are preferred.


STARTING DATE: Between September 1, 2024 and September 1, 2025


RESEARCH FOCUS:

Development of a systematic research program in their area of expertise. The preferred candidate will have expertise in hearing science, auditory neuroscience, auditory diagnostics, auditory rehabilitation, or a related field. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an extramurally funded research program in their area of expertise. Ideally, the successful candidate will complement one of our existing research clusters, which include:

The Brain and Auditory Sciences Research Initiative (BASRI), including six principal investigators

The Pediatric Auditory, Speech, and Language Initiative (PALS), including two principal investigators

The Research Enterprise in Voice and Swallowing (REVS), including five principal investigators

The Pittsburgh Translational Aphasia Research Initiative (PTARI), including five principal investigators

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Engage in projects that seek to advance outcomes associated with hearing science and hearing disorders or a related field.

Lead an extramurally funded research program in their area of research expertise and provide students with access to high quality research training experiences in their laboratory.

Leverage collaborative relationships with clinical and research collaborators within a vibrant healthcare community that includes the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC), and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

Engage in didactic, seminar, and/or clinical teaching and mentoring of students (teaching assignments may vary depending on salary support from funded research).

Direct student research within areas of expertise at all levels of the curriculum (e.g., Undergraduate Honors Theses, Doctor of Audiology (AuD), and PhD research experiences).

Participate in departmental, school, university and professional service.

Demonstrate successful experience and/or a strong motivation for excellence and innovation in classroom, clinical, and/or laboratory instruction and teaching.

Demonstrate high potential for or evidence of successful academic collaboration and/or a strong motivation for such collaboration and building and maintaining excellence in scholarly research and teaching in a research-intensive department, school, and university.

COLLABORATION EXPECTATIONS: The University of Pittsburgh offers exciting opportunities for research collaborations across several departments, centers, programs, and Universities. This includes the Department of BioEngineering, Department of Otolaryngology, Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Center for Neural Basis of Cognition, a joint venture between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain school, university, and community collaborations with other departments as well as UPMC and VAMC to advance research and clinical outcomes in their area of scholarship, locally, regionally, and nationally. It is expected that these collaborations may include audiologists, speech-language pathologists, physicians, occupational and/or physical therapists, rehabilitation science and technology engineers, other health services researchers, and educators. The tenure home will be in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders. Competitive candidates may also be offered secondary appointments in other collaborating units.


QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree in Communication Science and Disorders and/or related fields with demonstrated expertise in specified subject areas. Priority will be given to candidates whose scholarship and discovery will contribute to advancing the science of hearing and hearing disorders in adults.


While no candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will demonstrate many of the following professional and personal qualifications:


Evidence of collaboration and successful partnerships in hearing science, auditory neuroscience, or related areas with a focus on adult populations.

Evidence of research and scholarship and the potential to secure extramural funding.

Experience with pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training.

Ability to mentor students to achieve personal, departmental, school and university goals.

Familiarity with and experience with diverse types of funding sources, including federal and non-federal sources, private foundations, industry, training grants, and private public partnerships.



The Department of Communication Science and Disorders

CSD is one of nine departments in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). CSD offers BA, MA, MS, AuD, and PhD degrees. We are a vibrant department with innovative research, teaching, and clinical education opportunities for faculty and students. We have experienced significant growth over the past four years, including hiring a new department chair, four new program directors, nine new faculty, and multiple staff positions. The department now employs 24 full-time faculty and 19 full-time staff. Four collaborative research initiatives, the Brain and Auditory Sciences Research Initiative (BASRI), the Pediatric Auditory, Language and Speech Initiative, the Research Enterprise in Voice and Swallowing (REVS), and the Pittsburgh Translational Aphasia Research Initiative (PTARI) house sixteen research labs with over $15M in external research awards (NIH, NSF, PCORI, NIDILRR, DARPA, and non-federal agencies). The department mission centers on promoting equity, justice, and inclusion in the department, in clinical activities, research endeavors, and across the field. The US News and World Report ranks the SLP-MA program 3rd and the AuD program 7th, nationally. Faculty are engaged in local, state, national, and international collaborations and have a strong reputation in their areas of expertise to which they contribute through research, teaching and professional service.


CSD reaps many benefits as part of a research-intensive university, and as a member of cohesive and well-organized departments and programs in SHRS and as one of the Schools of the Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. The department has strong connections across SHRS and the University. Additionally, CSD enjoys ongoing collaborations with the world-class University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System, Carnegie Mellon University and other local universities, Pittsburgh public and private school systems, and local specialized schools and agencies.


The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

Since its founding in 1969, the School has created the notion of Rehabilitation Science as a discipline, grown to over 20 degree programs, forged beneficial linkages across the Health Sciences and the University, and has found their graduate programs holding top spots in annual graduate school rankings. SHRS is well positioned for the future with unparalleled research activity, strong faculty and staff, clinical education programs with excellent student outcomes, and a major focus on active/engaged learning. Five SHRS graduate programs earned top spots in the most recent US News and World Report's annual graduate school ranking of disciplines: Physical Therapy (#1), Occupational Therapy (#3), Speech-Language Pathology (#3), Audiology (#7), and Rehabilitation Counseling (#17).
